How do disc brakes work?

عملکرد ترمزهای دیسکی

Most cars now have disc brakes on the front wheels and some on all four wheels. The most important role of this braking system is to stop the car.

Disc brake

The most common type of disc brake in new cars is the single-piston floating caliper.

The main locations of the disc brakes are:

  • Brake pads
  • Caliper of a piston
  • Rotor attached to the wheel hub.

Different parts of disc brakes

Disc brakes are very similar to the brakes installed on bicycles. Bicycle brakes are equipped with a caliper that presses the brake pads on the wheel. In fact, a disc brake, replacing the wheel brake pads, puts pressure on the rotor.
In addition, when the force is transmitted by the cable, it is transmitted hydraulically and causes friction between the pads and the disc, which reduces the speed of the discs.
Every moving car has a certain amount of kinetic energy. The brakes must receive this energy from the car to stop. Each time the car is stopped, the brakes cause kinetic energy friction between the pads and the disc, which will be caused by heat. Most disc brakes are inflatable.

Disc brakes

In air brakes, there are a number of blades on either side of the disc that allow air to pass between the discs, leading to cooling of the part.

Self-adjusting brakes

Types of disc brakes A single-piston floating caliper that is both self-propelled and self-adjusting. The caliper has the ability to slide on the disk from one direction to another; Therefore, each time the brakes are applied, the caliper moves to the center of the disc. In addition, because there are no springs to keep the pads away from the disc, the pads always remain in slight contact with the disc.
This is a very important point; Because the diameter of the brake pistons is larger than the diameter of the main cylinders of the car. If the brake pistons accumulate in the cylinder, it can cause the pads to catch or engage. You can transfer the brake fluid to the cylinders just by using the brake pedal several times.

Self-adjusting disc brake

Older cars used a fixed caliper with two or four pistons that applied pressure to both sides of the rotor pad; But now this model is completely obsolete, given that single-piston models were more cost-effective and, of course, safer.

Emergency brakes

Cars with disc brakes on all four wheels have an emergency brake with a mechanism independent of the other main brakes when the main brakes fail, and in many cars a cable is used to apply the emergency brake.

Handbrake

Some cars with four disc brakes have a separate brake called a drum brake that attaches to the rear wheel hub. In fact, handbrake is only used for emergency braking systems that are activated only via cable and do not have a hydraulic system. Another component designed for cars is the rotation of a screw or the movement of a gear that causes the disc brake piston to contract.

Adjust brakes

The most common brakes that require service are changing the pads. Disc brake pads usually contain metal parts that are expressed as indicators of wear.

Brake pads

Brake pad failure has different symptoms when the required amount of material on the pad is under friction When worn, the wear indicator connects to the disc and produces a strange sound. This means that the pads must be replaced.

There is a slot on the surface of the caliper so you can see the amount of material left on the pads. Occasionally there is a deep wear and tear on the brake rotor, which may cause the friction to warp or deflect; That is, it will no longer be flat. If this happens, the brakes will vibrate and there is usually nothing to worry about; Because these two problems will be easily eliminated by using lathes or rotor machining. To do this, some material is removed from both sides of the rotor to create a smooth surface.

You do not have to make a refund every time you replace the brake shoes, you will only need to do so when they are warped or worn out.

If the rotors are machined more than allowed, their lifespan will be reduced; Therefore, this operation is possible by separating the material from the surface. Brake rotors after each
